Black Academia This Week Vol. 5

3–4 minutes

Once again I must say thank you for stopping by to read another volume of Black Academia This Week. As always this is a space to share what is occurring in the Black academic community. This post is also a written version of the IGTV series that can be found on my @blkgradstudent. Overall, I hope you enjoy this week’s Black Academia This Week.

1: Career Day At The Financial Diet

The Financial Diet (TFD) was a blog started by Chelsea Fagan discussing her own process of tracking her budget, and since it has grown into its own company. The company focuses on young women having conversations about financial literacy, and that is what leads to events such as the Career Day at TFD. The reason why we are discussing this in Black Academia This Week is our friend Angela, the founder of Grad Girl Wellness, will be a panelist for the event’s How to Do Grad School The Smart Way. Her event is geared towards providing tactics for attain a degree in an affordable and responsible way. It’s bound to be a great event because if you have seen Angela’s content you know she is bound to drop knowledge that you can use on your academic journey. The event normally would be $29, but if you use her code provided above you can attend for $24.

If you want to view more of Angela’s content check out her Instagram @gradgirlwellness.

Louisiana State University (LSU) has selected the university’s first Black President in Dr. William Tate IV. With originally 23 candidates, there was 3 finalist, and Dr. Tate officially was selected on May 6th, 2021. Dr. Tate will officially start serving as LSU’s President starting in July 2021. Dr. Tate has an exceptional academic background, currently serving as the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs at the University of South Carolina. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland, College Park in mathematics education. He also earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Texas, Dallas and a Masters of Psychiatric Epidemiology from Washington University of Medicine. Dr. Tate has also held positions at a variety of other universities prior to the University of South Carolina. Dr. Tate will be a great fit for this role, not only for his academic accolades but for his ability to be personable with the students and community.

3: Oakland Tech First Black Male Valedictorian

Note: This topic I am being a little biased in selecting because I was born in Oakland, and one of my really close friends went to Oakland Tech.

With that disclaimer out the way, let’s congratulate Ahmed Muhammad on being the first Black male valedictorian at Oakland. While the news of him becoming the valedictorian was announced last week, this week he decided what university he decided to attend on local news. Ahmed, decided that he would attend Stanford University. While this might be thought to be typical of a valedictorian, Ahmed was accepted into all 11 schools that he applied to including Harvard and Princeton. Ultimately, Stanford was his dream school, which was the deciding factor in him deciding to choose there over his other choices. While at Oakland Tech, this young man attained a 4.73 GPA and for his senior year he is expected to have a 5.0 GPA for the academic year. For all his hard work, dedication, and focus I wish him the all the best. I am excited to see where his success leads him throughout life and his academic journey.
